The true story of the battle of Xom Bo II that was fought on June 17, 1967. It was a battle that pitted Five hundred 1st Infantry Division soldiers against 800 to 2000 Viet Cong from the 271st Regiment. The bloody clash took the lives of 39 Americans and seriously wounded 150 more. It is the minute by minute story of what happened that day in the steamy jungle and the story of the men who fought so valiantly to survive the ambush. It is the story of the loved ones left behind and the wounded who struggled to become whole again. It's a story that is the result of talking to many of the survivors of the battle and the wives, brothers, sisters, or friends of those who were there when over 8000 artillery rounds rained down around LZ X-Ray to dislodge the entrenched Viet Cong. June 17, 1967 is a story of war, men, and the loved ones. It is the story of the youth, culture and happenings that made the battle of Xom Bo II such an enigma for the summer of love in 1967. It is an angry story and a healing story that will bring feelings to the surface and tear at your heart.

June 17 1967 Battle of Xom Bo II eBook David Hearne Troy Oliver Reviews

This true story written by David Hearne is a firsthand account of a deadly battle that he experienced in Vietnam as a young 1st Lieutenant in June 17, 1967, and the resulting toll on the lives of the men who fought alongside of him. Written in a straight forward narrative style, it is still a riveting page-turner that provides gut wrenching descriptions of the horror of close quarters combat. He provides vivid descriptions of the "grunt's" perspective of combat, where one can only see immediately what's directly ahead and right and left of their position. The intensity of the battle of Xom Bo II equals that of WW II or Korea battles, where within minutes dozens of men fall dead or wounded. In this battle, Hearne talks of 39 men killed and 150 wounded and only the courage, determination and fighting skills of the men of the 2/28th and of the 1/16th kept the battle from being a total massacre. Sadly, what these men experienced was typical of what so many Vietnam combat vets lived through and has been so easily forgotten in an attempt to forget the tragic folly that was the Vietnam War. I highly recommend this book.
When we came back home from our time in Vietnam, we were told that it was not a real war. Anyone who believes that ought to read David Hearne's well researched and well written book, The Battle of Xom Bo II. He not only tells the story of the battle that took place on June 17, 1967 but also gives an accurate account of what it was like to be an infantryman in a combat unit in the jungles of Vietnam, from the equipment we carried, the weapons we used to how we traveled, the food we ate, the search and destroys, the steamy hot weather to the mosquitoes. As a participant in the battle, reading the book brought back a lot of memories. I could hear and see the battle, the artillery, the mortars, the bombs from the jets, the smoke and the buzzing of bullets and shrapnel everywhere. Hearne brings out the fact that we were fighting a well trained, well equipped, determined, tenacious enemy.

It was time for a book to be written like this. as told by those who were there and remember the 39 dead and 150 wounded. If this was not a war, I don't know what is. This is a good and recommended read for anyone interested in combat in Vietnam.

A very well written description of true Combat written by David Hearn. I was at this battle along with David Hearn, this is an upfront look at true warfare, the loss of good men and the camaraderie shared by these men, many very young when their lives were taken from them, each soldier fought with bravery, many doing things that were above and beyond the call of duty. The book describes in detail what took place that day, the battlefield was very spread out and the enemy was well prepared. David goes into excellent detail about many of the men that fought that day. This is one day in my life that I will never forget, the battle itself and the Search and Destroy missions the next days after the battle. War will never be pretty, but must sometimes must take place. You read many books about combat, but when a person that actually fought and was a Leader in Combat, writes a book about Combat, you will never have a better description
I wanted to read this book, “June 17, 1967” Battle of Xom Bo II. I lost my brother Stephen in this battle at the age of 20. I wanted to read it, but I was finding it much more difficult than I imagined. David Hearne painted a masterpiece and for this novice who had just been pushed out into the world a year earlier from an eight year stay at Boystown, NE and was still adjusting to what life was all about in the “Real World” learning of my brothers death in Vietnam was a difficult pill to swallow.

Mr. Hearne used the colors of his painted canvas to try and illustrate the difference between being in a theater and watching your favorite thriller with laying on the ground in mud and water with the rain pelting down on you, while listening to the pop of AK-47's crack, seeing the sight of napalm spreading across the field and listening to the brass cartridges spray out of your rifle; you would hear your friends and comrades crying out for medics and ammo or even see one or two of your brothers in arms lying there, just a foot or two away in deafening silence after making their final sacrifice.

First Lieutenant Hearne was one of the lucky ones. He walked away and spent the next 50 years trying to put that awful battle into words so people like me; people who have never seen anyone being shot at or killed, people who have never spent a single minute in such harsh circumstances might be able to understand the horrifying experience these 18, 19 and 20 year old men had to go through. Lieutenant Hearne was one of the lucky few who had to watch his own men get crated up and sent home to their final resting place. Thank you sir for trying to let us see a small and personal glimpse of the hell you've had to live with.
